One of the best things about PCM cooling is how little upkeep it needs. Unlike a fridge or cold room with a compressor to service, a PCM cooler box has just one simple maintenance task: recharging the packs. Here is how often you actually need to do anything.

Recharging: after every use

"Recharging" a PCM pack simply means freezing it solid again. After a box has done its job and the packs have melted, you re-freeze them in any freezer and they are ready for another 24+ hours of cold. This is not really maintenance — it is just the normal cycle, the same way you would refill anything you use up.

A pack that goes back into the freezer fully melted will be recharged and ready by the next day.

Replacing: rarely

Replacing a PCM pack — swapping it for a new one — is a much rarer event. A quality sealed PCM pack can be frozen and melted many, many times before it needs replacing. Unlike ice, which you consume and rebuy daily, the same PCM packs keep working through cycle after cycle.

What if you don't own a freezer?
